Schumacher Metal Works is an OBS specialist in Nuevo, California, building long-travel suspension and custom parts for 1988–1998 GMT400 Chevy and GMC trucks — the platform the big desert-suspension brands skip. Their own tagline is “Making OBS Chevy’s Great Again,” and the catalog backs it up: where Camburg starts at 1999 and Dirt King at 2007, Schumacher sells 88–98 long-travel as an off-the-shelf product with published pricing.

Other work

Beyond the OBS catalog the shop does CNC plasma cutting, custom fabrication and prototyping, part installation, and full ground-up builds and race prep for desert use. They also take on Baja bugs, Ford Rangers and UTV cage work, plus flatbed and big-rig hauler trailers.

Why it matters for an OBS prerunner build

Schumacher is the main reason a GMT400 long-travel build no longer has to be pure custom fabrication. For how the platform fits together — the 2WD coil-spring versus 4WD torsion-bar front end and what a long-travel setup actually takes — read our OBS Chevy long-travel guide, then the full Chevy OBS prerunner build guide.
