Prerunner Fiberglass Fenders and Bedsides: What They Are and Why Everybody Runs Them
The short answer: prerunners swap steel fenders and bedsides for fiberglass because long-travel suspension pushes the wheels farther out and cranks up tire size, and the factory sheet metal simply can’t clear it. Fiberglass panels are wider, lighter, and cheap enough to replace when the desert eats one. You get the classic wide stance, you shed weight, and when you tag a rock at speed you’re out a panel instead of a fender and the frame behind it. That’s the whole pitch. Everything below is the detail that actually matters when you go to buy or build.
If you’re brand new to any of this, it’s worth reading what a prerunner actually is first, then come back. The fiberglass thing makes a lot more sense once you understand the suspension underneath it.
Why prerunners run fiberglass in the first place
It comes down to what happens when you build the suspension. When you go long-travel, you’re not just lifting the truck. You’re widening it and letting the wheels move a lot farther up and down. Once you’ve done that, the stock fenders become a problem in three or four different ways at once, and fiberglass tends to solve all of them together.
- Clearance for the wider track. Long-travel arms and wider spindles push the front tires outboard, often several inches per side. Aftermarket fenders are built wider on purpose so the tire isn’t hanging out in the wind rubbing metal.
- Room for bigger tires and more travel. Taller, wider tires cycling through a foot or more of wheel travel need somewhere to go. Fiberglass fenders and bedsides are typically shaped with a bigger opening and more bulge so the tire clears at full stuff instead of tearing the panel apart.
- Weight. Fiberglass is generally lighter than the steel it replaces. Every pound off the nose and over the rear axle is a pound the suspension doesn’t have to fight. It’s not a night-and-day difference by itself, but it stacks with everything else you’re doing to the truck.
- The stance. Let’s be honest, part of it is the look. Wide fiberglass over big tires is the prerunner silhouette. People run it because it works and because it looks right.
- Cheap to replace. Out in the desert you’re going to hit stuff. A cracked fiberglass fender is a bolt-on fix, usually a lot cheaper than repairing or replacing dented steel and whatever it was welded or bolted to. You treat these as consumables, more or less.
Steel bends and stays bent. Fiberglass cracks, and a crack you can often glass back together in the garage or just swap the panel. For a truck whose entire job is getting beat on, that trade usually makes sense.
What actually gets swapped
You don’t have to do all of it, and plenty of builds do the fenders and stop there. But here’s the usual menu, roughly in the order people tackle it:

A few things to keep in mind about the menu. Front fenders and bedsides are usually sold as a matched look, so a lot of people buy them as a set to keep the flare and the lines consistent. Bedsides in particular often mean you’re committing to either bed-mount bedsides that bolt over or replace the factory bed panels, or a full fiberglass bed depending on the kit. Read the product description carefully, because “bedsides” can mean different things from one maker to the next.

Finishing: raw, pre-painted, or Line-X
This is where a lot of first-timers get surprised. Most fiberglass panels don’t show up ready to bolt on and look finished. You’ve got three general paths, and they cost very different amounts of time and money.
Raw or gel-coat
Raw fiberglass or a gel-coat surface is the cheapest way to buy and the most work to finish. Gel-coat gives you a smoother starting point than bare glass, but you’ll typically still be block-sanding, filling low spots and pinholes, and priming before paint. If you want a show finish, budget real hours here, or plan to hand it to a body shop. Plenty of trucks just run raw glass and don’t care, which is a completely valid desert-truck choice.
Pre-painted
Some vendors offer panels painted to a color, which saves you the prep-and-paint headache. The catch is matching. Getting a separately painted panel to match your truck’s existing color and sheen can be tricky, especially on an older truck with faded factory paint. If the whole truck is getting painted anyway, this matters less.
Line-X or bedliner coating
Spraying the panels in Line-X or a similar bedliner coating is popular for a reason. It’s tough, it hides a multitude of fiberglass imperfections so you can skip a lot of the fine bodywork, it adds some abrasion resistance, and the textured finish just looks the part on a desert truck. The tradeoffs are added weight (which partly gives back what you saved going fiberglass), a texture that isn’t for everyone, and the fact that it’s hard to undo once it’s on. For a truck that’s going to get sandblasted by the desert anyway, a lot of builders consider this the sweet spot.
One reality check on all three: finishing cost can rival or exceed the cost of the panels themselves. Factor it in before you decide fiberglass is the “cheap” route. It’s cheap to replace, not always cheap to make it look good the first time.
Fitment and mounting: the part nobody warns you about
Here’s the honest truth that gets glossed over in a lot of build photos: fiberglass panels take work to fit right. These generally aren’t precision-stamped like factory steel. Expect some or all of the following, and you won’t be blindsided:
- Trimming and test-fitting. Edges often need to be trimmed, sanded, and dry-fit multiple times to get gaps even and lines matched to the doors and the rest of the body.
- Panel-to-panel variation. Fiberglass parts can vary a bit unit to unit. Two “identical” fenders may not be perfectly identical, so a little massaging is normal.
- Mounting hardware. You may be drilling new mounting holes, adding backing or tabs, and figuring out your own hardware. Some kits come with mounts, many don’t. Dzus fasteners, bolts through fender wells, or bonded tabs are all common approaches.
- Alignment with big tires. Because the whole point is tire clearance, you’ll want to cycle the suspension (or at least eyeball it at full stuff and full droop) to confirm the tire actually clears before you commit your final mounting.
- Gaps and flex. Fiberglass flexes more than steel, so mounting points and edges need enough support that panels don’t crack or flap at speed.
None of this is a reason not to do it. It’s just the reality, and it’s why a set of fenders is a weekend project (or several) rather than a lunch-break bolt-on. Budget the time.
Fiberglass vs steel: the honest tradeoff

If your truck never leaves pavement and never sees big tires, factory steel is honestly fine and less hassle. The moment you go long-travel and want the tire clearance, the stance, and cheap replaceability, fiberglass earns its keep.
Buying and DIY guidance
A few practical pointers to save you grief, without pretending every kit is the same:
- Match the panels to your suspension, not the other way around. Know your track width and tire size first. Fenders are usually sold by how much wider they run over stock, so buy for the clearance you actually need.
- Buy fronts and bedsides together if you can. Matching the look and the flare is easier when it all comes from one line of parts.
- Ask what’s included. Mounts? Hardware? Gel-coat or raw? Pre-drilled? These vary a lot and change how much work you’re signing up for.
- Budget for finishing up front. Whether it’s paint, Line-X, or your own labor, the panel price is only part of the total.
- Plan the mounting before you cut. Dry-fit everything, cycle the suspension, mark your clearance, then commit. Measure twice, drill once, because fiberglass doesn’t forgive a hole in the wrong spot the way you’d like.
- Keep a repair kit around. Fiberglass resin, mat, and a little body filler live in a lot of prerunner garages for a reason. Field cracks happen.
DIY is very doable if you’re comfortable with basic bodywork and you’re patient with test-fitting. If you want a flawless painted finish, that’s the part most people farm out to a body shop even when they mount the panels themselves.

Are fiberglass fenders street legal?
Generally the panels themselves aren’t the legal issue. What matters in most places is that your tires are covered adequately and you meet local fender-coverage and lighting rules. Wider fiberglass fenders are often better at covering a wide tire than trimmed steel. Rules vary by state and locality, so check your local requirements before you assume you’re good.
Do I have to run bedsides if I do the front fenders?
No. Plenty of trucks run wide front fenders and keep the stock bed. Bedsides are mostly about matching the width and look front-to-rear, and about clearing a widened rear end or bigger rear tires. It’s a look-and-clearance call, not a requirement.
Is Line-X or paint better for fiberglass panels?
Depends on what you want. Line-X (or similar bedliner) is tougher, hides imperfections, and suits a hard-use desert truck, but it adds weight and texture and is hard to remove. Paint looks cleaner and lighter but needs more prep and is easier to chip. Many desert-focused builds lean toward the coating; show-focused builds lean toward paint. Neither is wrong.
