Ford Atlas Concept F-150 is the Future of Ford Motor Co.

Ford unveiled the Atlas Concept in Detroit on January 15, 2013 as its vision for the future of the F-150. It is a design study aimed at showing where capability, fuel efficiency, and smart truck technology were headed.

The styling leans hard into the Built Ford Tough look: prominent wheel arches, a wide stance, and a chiseled grille. Inside, thin lightweight seats free up rear legroom, with “floating” instrument pods and glove-friendly controls.

Fuel efficiency

The Atlas runs a next-generation EcoBoost powertrain with truck-tuned Auto Start-Stop that shuts the engine off in traffic and suspends itself when the truck knows it is towing. Ford noted EcoBoost engines use direct injection and turbocharging for up to 20 percent better fuel economy and up to 15 percent lower CO2 versus larger-displacement engines, with more than 500,000 sold globally at the time, including 250,000 in the F-150.

A set of active aerodynamic features work together to save more than 2 mpg on the highway without hurting towing or hauling:

• Active grille shutters that close at cruising speed
• Active wheel shutters powered by self-charging batteries
• A drop-down front air dam that lowers at highway speed and raises for ground clearance
• Power running boards that tuck up when moving
